Tomo House is a 12-unit residential development located on a double-wide lot in Vancouver, designed to offer an innovative response to the city’s growing demand for middle-density housing. The name Tomo—short for “together + more”—reflects the project’s core values of community, collaboration, and shared living.

As housing prices continue to rise faster than incomes, many families are seeking alternatives to traditional single-family homes and high-rise condos. Tomo House offers a “cohousing lite” model that bridges this gap by creating attainable ownership opportunities within a thoughtfully scaled, community-oriented environment.

Surrounded by a mix of single-family homes and low-rise apartment buildings, Tomo House is strategically located to blend into its surroundings while introducing a new housing typology. The architectural form and massing respond to this context with sensitivity and purpose, aiming to provide the “Missing Middle” — housing that is affordable, sociable, sustainable, and buildable.

Our structural engineering team played a key role in translating these ideals into a durable and efficient structure. We delivered practical solutions to support flexible layouts, optimize material use, and meet performance standards — all while respecting the project’s architectural vision. The result is a resilient, livable, and forward-thinking community that embodies the interconnected goals of affordability, sociability, and sustainability.
